Women's Everest Base Camp Trek: 15-Day Women-Only Departure

A women-only group to Base Camp, led by licensed female guides — supportive, safe, and directly backing women's employment in Nepal's mountains.

15 days5,644 m maxFrom $1,550
The Women's Everest Base Camp Trek is a women-only departure to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and Kala Patthar (5,644 m), led from front to back by licensed female guides. It follows the classic route over a comfortable 15 days, with an extra acclimatisation day built in at Namche Bazaar, and it exists for a simple reason that many women give directly: an all-women group and a female guide make for a more relaxed, supportive, and safe experience, especially at altitude, where being able to speak openly about how your body is coping matters.

Women-only Himalayan trekking is well established in Nepal, and it grew from the ground up. 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking, founded in Pokhara in 1993 by Lucky Chhetri and her sisters, pioneered women-guided trekking after female travellers reported uncomfortable experiences with male guides; its associated nonprofit, Empowering Women of Nepal, has since trained roughly two thousand women as guides and porters. Booking a women-led trek is a practical way to put money directly into that network and into the livelihoods of women in the mountains.

The Everest/Khumbu region is well developed, busy, and generally considered safe for women trekking in small groups, and a female guide adds cultural insight and an understanding of women-specific needs — from health on the trail to the small logistics of teahouse life — that rounds out the experience. Group sizes are kept small so nobody gets lost in the crowd, and the pace is set for the group, not the fastest walker in it.

Everything else is the full Everest Base Camp Trek: the Hillary Suspension Bridge, the Sherpa museum at Khumjung, Tengboche Monastery, the glacier walk to Base Camp, and a shared summit sunrise at Kala Patthar with a group of women who started as strangers and finish as a team.

Kathmandu

Arrive Kathmandu: group welcome and briefing

Easy
1,400 mD

2

Fly Kathmandu to Lukla · trek to Phakding

Moderate
2,610 m9 km3-4 hrsB,L,D

The short flight to Lukla (2,860 m), then an easy downhill first day along the Dudh Koshi to Phakding (2,610 m) — a gentle start to find the group's rhythm on the trail.

3
Namche Bazaar

Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Moderate
3,440 m11 km5-6 hrsB,L,D

The trail hugs the Dudh Koshi, threading a chain of prayer-flag-strung suspension bridges before the checkpoint at Monjo marks the edge of Sagarmatha National Park. From there the day's real work begins: a long switchback haul up through the pines to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), where the guide sets a steady group tempo and the first acclimatisation stop begins.

4
Namche Bazaar

Acclimatisation: Namche, Everest View Hotel and Khumjung

Easy
3,440 m9 km3-4 hrsB,L,D

A "climb high, sleep low" day up to the Everest View Hotel (3,880 m) for the first views of Everest and Ama Dablam, then down through Khumjung and its Sherpa culture museum, returning to Namche for a second night.

5
Namche Bazaar

Extra acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar

Easy
3,440 m4 km1-3 hrsB,L,D

The extra rest day that gives this women-only itinerary its relaxed pace. A full second day at Namche to adapt, explore the Saturday market, meet local women-run businesses and cooperatives, and simply enjoy the group's company before heading higher.

6
Tengboche

Namche Bazaar to Tengboche

Moderate
3,860 m10 km5-6 hrsB,L,D

An early ridge-line traverse to Kyangjuma with Ama Dablam filling the skyline ahead, a knee-testing drop back to the river, then a shaded rhododendron climb to Tengboche (3,860 m). The group usually reaches the monastery in time for the afternoon prayers, the deep horns carrying across a courtyard framed by Everest, Nuptse, and Lhotse.

7

Tengboche to Dingboche

Moderate
4,410 m10 km5-6 hrsB,L,D

A gentle start through the mossy birch of Deboche and a bridge over the Imja Khola, then a climb past Pangboche's old gompa as the tree line falls away and the country opens into the wind-scoured barley fields of Dingboche (4,410 m). Now above 4,000 m, the guide moves the group onto twice-daily oxygen-saturation checks.

8

Acclimatisation: Dingboche, Nangkartshang Peak

Moderate
4,410 m8 km4-5 hrsB,L,D

The key acclimatisation day. A steady group climb up the Nangkartshang ridge to around 5,083 m opens a wide panorama of Makalu, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam, before the descent back to sleep low at Dingboche (4,410 m) — the climb-high, sleep-low rule at work before the higher, colder stages.

9

Dingboche to Lobuche

Moderate
4,940 m8 km4-5 hrsB,L,D

A short but demanding day: the steep pull up to Dughla (4,620 m), then a sobering pause among the Chupki Lhara memorials to climbers lost on Everest, before the trail joins the Khumbu Glacier's lateral moraine and follows it to Lobuche (4,940 m), the last stop before Base Camp.

10
Gorak Shep

Lobuche to Gorak Shep · Everest Base Camp

Strenuous
5,164 m13 km7-8 hrsB,L,D

To Gorak Shep (5,164 m), then out across the glacier to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) beneath the Khumbu Icefall. Reaching the Base Camp boulders together, as a group of women, is the emotional high point of the trek. Return to Gorak Shep for the night.

Everest Base Camp (5,364 m)

11

Sunrise: Kala Patthar · descend to Pheriche

Strenuous
4,240 m16 km6-7 hrsB,L,D

A head-torch start in the dark for the cold, slow climb to Kala Patthar (5,644 m), the trek's highest point and the moment Everest's summit finally reveals itself at first light. Then a long, knee-heavy descent to Pheriche (4,240 m) and its welcome, thicker air.

Kala Patthar (5,644 m)

12
Namche Bazaar

Pheriche to Namche Bazaar

Moderate
3,440 m20 km6-7 hrsB,L,D

A long descending day back through Tengboche to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), easier walking in the richer air below 4,000 m, with hot showers and bakeries waiting at Namche.

13

Namche Bazaar to Lukla

Moderate
2,860 m18 km6-7 hrsB,L,D

The last trekking day down the valley through Monjo and Phakding, then the final climb to Lukla (2,860 m) for a celebratory group dinner and a chance to thank the female guide and porter team.

14
Kathmandu

Fly Lukla to Kathmandu: farewell dinner

Easy

Morning flight back to Kathmandu (1,400 m), a free afternoon in Thamel, and a group farewell dinner. A buffer day is wise in case Lukla weather delays the flight.

Is This Trek Right For You?

Concrete fitness benchmarks for this specific itinerary, not a generic difficulty label.

Fitness benchmark

You should be comfortable walking 10-15 km on uneven, rocky terrain, climbing continuously for 5-7 hours, and recovering well overnight to do it again the next day. Some prior multi-day hiking experience is strongly recommended.

Who typically completes it

Most trekkers who complete this are in their 20s-55s with a consistent cardio base built over 2-3 months beforehand. Older or less-active trekkers regularly finish it too, just with more dedicated training time.
